conulyI'm still trying for raised-ish beds (excepting the brassicas and peas, which are just planted in the dirt) so I decided to finally mix the soil for the top.
Things I have learned:
A. when buying peat or coco peat, measure out four cubic feet and ask yourselfif you really need that much.
B. when they say this stuff can absorb 10x its weight in water, they aren't kidding! Break it apart before you wet it.
C. lovely aged compost is a joy forever.
D. even if it doesn't need to be aged, do not store goat manure in the front hallway.
E. 50 pounds of anything is a lot.
F. my gardening gloves aren't waterproof. Luckily, hands can get washed.
I have removed still more tons of rock in my quest for ragweed-free soil, transplanted what turned out to be over 100 daffodils (in a big clump, growing through lemon balm), found and moved the onions, and kept my little brassicas alive. I planted them as tiny seedlings, and now all of a sudden they have true leaves and are getting big! The tomatoes are developing real leaves, too, so I'm bringing them out by the end of the week, no matter what.
