Not so the tomatoes and peppers, though. I may have to buy plants later in the season. What should I do for next year to avoid this situation? Warmer soil, everybody says, so I guess I start with that.

I know ours isn't (which is why I don't start before April), so yeah, that may be it. They want reliable, regular warmth. That - and enough light. Brassica are a lot more forgiving!

I've gotten surprise tomato plants from spots in the garden where someone apparently tossed a tomato the summer before, so yep, that might just work. If it doesn't, you can still buy plants in a month's time ;)
