My brassicas have germinated!

Not so the tomatoes and peppers, though. I may have to buy plants later in the season. What should I do for next year to avoid this situation? Warmer soil, everybody says, so I guess I start with that.

Give them some more time - if it's as cold in your place as it is here, maybe they're still biding their time. As long as they didn't try to germinate and then froze, they might still come out once the weather (and the soil) get warmer... I never even bother to sow tomatoes before April, even in "better" years, even inside.

I started them indoors, as you're supposed to, but our house isn't always warm, I guess.

I know ours isn't (which is why I don't start before April), so yeah, that may be it. They want reliable, regular warmth. That - and enough light. Brassica are a lot more forgiving!

My mother suggests that if I toss them in the yard I may get some volunteers, we always seem to, but I think I'll just buy plants in a month or so.

I've gotten surprise tomato plants from spots in the garden where someone apparently tossed a tomato the summer before, so yep, that might just work. If it doesn't, you can still buy plants in a month's time ;)
