because they're relying on their iPhones to help navigate and aren't even bothering to bring simple things like maps or compasses as backup.

And people look at me funny when I tell them I don't use GPS. Google Maps, yes. I LOOOOVE Google Maps. I'll print out directions and a map of the area when I go anywhere. And then when I get lost, I READ THE FUCKING MAP!

I could have easily told anyone that you don't rely on a cell phone or iPod GPS. I was looking for nearby geocaches using the geocaching app on my iPod, and Monster was like, "Oh, I can find that really easily." The geocache was hidden in a tree on a street about half a mile away. Monster, relying on the iPod location, was on the wrong side of the street. I used my geocaching GPS to find it. Gotta be careful with that, though; a couple of times it has tried to lead me off the sides of cliffs into the ocean, or tried to get me to walk straight through stone walls like I'm the Kool-Aid creature.

GPS is a very useful tool, whether you're walking or driving, but you have to remember that that's all it is. If I'm in the hills, I'll have GPS (on the phone), and a map, and a compass, and yes, I know how to use them and what their limits are.
(If you're on Kinder Scout in the Peak District, do not rely on a magnetic compass. The ground's full of iron ore, and your bearing can be out by 90 degrees or more.)
