Another little memo from Ana's school.

All emphasis is mine this time.

Summer is almost here and what a perfect time to read and learn. Studies show that children who continue to read during the summer perform better in school in the fall.

Below is a list of local libraries in the area which are excellent resources for reading material.

St. George Library Center - 5 Central Avenue, Staten Island, NY 7.18.332.8560
Stapleton Library - 132 Canal Street at Wright Street, Staten Island, NY 718.727.0427
West New Brighton Library - 976 Castleton Avenue at New Burgher Avenue, Staten Island, NY 717.442.1416

To encourage your children to read more attached is a suggestive summer reading list. Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program encourages you to read books of your own choosing and earn a FREE book, by following three easy steps:

Read any eight books this summer and record them in the provided journal.
Bring your completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 22nd and September 4th, 2012.
Choose a FREE reading book from the list on the back of the journal.

Every student that returns his Summer Reading Journal (please make a copy) from Barnes and Nobel to school in September will be entitled to "Popsicles with the Principal".

Happy reading!

Aside from the obvious ("suggestive" reading list? Three different ways to talk about Barnes and Noble?) and the fact that I'm certain there should be more commas in there somewhere, there's the little fact that the Stapleton Library has been closed for a year and counting. They're not opening until next spring, I believe. Which is fine, because they kinda suck compared to the just-as-close St. George Library, but since she obviously had to go to the website to get their phone number you'd think she might've taken note of the fact that they're closed.

Of course, then you turn to the reading list for 4th grade and you read gems such as "Classic tale of a sleepy little village of Roundbrook catch wind that there's a dragon running loose in the countryside" and "His desperate to find out who he is and is haunted by dreams of a big castle and a terrifying escape on a boat. Who can he trust to help him solve the mystery."

So I guess I'm stopping by the office again today and pointing out that, at the bare minimum, they need a god damn proofreader. This is ridiculous. This isn't even stylistic, it's just riddled with errors.

Speaking as a (lazy) teacher, it's quite probable that they looked up the phone number for the library three years ago, are just using the same handout they used last year and the year before, with minor tweaks, and haven't actually checked any library websites in the last year.

However, there is no excuse for an illiterately-written reading list. Wow. Those read like they were written by the fourth-graders?

I kind of love "suggestive summer reading list", but sadly, that is not what they meant.

Hmm. I think these are badly copy-pasted from the B&N book page(s), but without the skills to modify them and make them make sense.

I'm LOLing at the suggestive reading list. And also annoyed by the grammatical errors. I got out a pen and fixed signs hung around our apartment complex because they were bothering me. :P
