The cat nearly coughed one up on Jenn's head today, and while that's hilarious it still had to be cleaned up later.

No, I think it's probably not. How often does the cat hack up hairballs, anyway? Surely not often enough that you could establish a systematic reward for coughing them up in a designated place - or if so, would be better to brush the cat regularly and give it some hairball medicine.

It's the shedding season. My kitty-boy's got very short, fine fur, but right now it's puffing out in clumps; I brush him as much as he'll tolerate, but there's still cat hair everywhere. I'm sure the weather's hotter where you are, so your kitty may be shedding more. Fleas are a cause of hairballs, because they cause excess licking and grooming, so make sure she hasn't got any.
