This is Autism Speak's response in request for support for Alex Barton. Apparently, his situation is "too political" but they "silently" support him.
Alex Barton, of course, is the five year old kid whose kindergarten teacher incited and coerced the other children into publicly humiliating him. The woman has appealed her absurdly light punishment. I have heard alternately either that her actions were justified or mitigated by the fact that he's on the spectrum and should never have been in her class (I think no child should be in her class, she's clearly unqualified if this is how she enforces her dubious notions of discipline), or, alternatively, that her actions are mitigated because he wasn't officially diagnosed (this is the scarier argument, as it flat-out says that it's okay to treat other people, including those with less power than you, particularly young children, in this abominable fashion). I'm sure some people manage to hold both opinions at the same time.
I am not a happy Connie. Admittedly, AS is useless and insulting in turns, but at the bare minimum you'd think they'd be able to send some of their ill-gotten funds in the direction of a good cause for a change. I mean, seriously, no matter how low I set the bar for them, I still would never have expected them to mess this one up! How could they? The Way of Truth and Light is so incredibly obvious. Just not to them, I guess. (Oh, well, it's probably just as well.)
