Two days ago, Ana was looking at the microwave.

And she very carefully spelled out s-t-a-r-t. So I gave her the word, of course.

Today, she did it again, and I asked her "What does that spell?" and she told me!!!!

Isn't that the coolest thing ever?

(Of course, mention something like this to my mom, and she goes "You know, you were reading at that age!" Like Ana's somehow slow or something. Jenn wasn't even reading until she was six, and that's normal. (And probably part of why I learned to read that same year, y'know?) Sometimes, my mother can be a bit irritating.)

i also learned to read at the same time my older sister did. she was 5 and a bit and i was 3 and a bit. but you should tell your mom that it's even COOLER because Ana is the older sister, and she's learning very early without big sister influence. :)

Never attribute to malice, etc. *g* It's probably an annoying habit, but one of my hobbies is trying to find less offensive interpretations of things people say or do.

No, not really. She keeps trying to tell me that Ana's "not that bright, not like you two were". And I'm going "She's perfectly intelligent, and she's advanced in a number of ways..." but all she can say is "Not like you two were".

Which might be true, I certainly don't know, but she doesn't need to say it, especially after I've said, and I'm sure Jenn has said, that the comparison isn't appreciated.

I'm going with "don't bring up the subject at all". Sooner or later, she'll get the point and stop saying things like that.

No, Jenn's right. Our mother is a wonderful person, really, and she doesn't mean "Ana's stupid" (which is patently untrue anyway), but she also doesn't mean "She's taking after her auntie!!!!!", and if she *did* mean that, it'd somehow include "and not her mom, who was kinda slow" (again, untrue).

I think I phrased my first comment badly--I was placing more emphasis on the "well, it's not so surprising" part and less on the "she's taking after you" part. That worked better in my head.
