So, I'm listening for the kids tonight while Jenn and 'dul are out.

And I got them to sleep pretty fast - Ana just about fell asleep while still saying "I DON'T WANNA GO TO BED!!!!" and the baby wasn't much long after that. Given that earlier today I put family friend Su to sleep at the zoo (and she's reputed to never take a nap), I was feeling pretty happy.

Naturally, such hubris can't go unpunished. Naturally.

An hour and a half after falling asleep, Ana wakes up with a vengeance. And she screams so loud, the baby wakes up - of course, because they're in the same room. And, of course, the baby decided she was awake, she must be hungry. So the baby is screaming, Ana is screaming, I feel like screaming - and I can't find the bottle.

And they're screaming.

And I can't find the damn bottle.

And they're SCREAMINGSCREAMINGSCREAMING and I can't find the bottle, and....

I call my mom. I'm just like "Look, do you want to save three lives tonight? Come downstairs and help me with these kids and I'll find the bottle"

I call Jenn and 'dul. They don't pick up. And I call them again. And they don't pick up. And they don't pick up. And they don't pick up.

And I can't find the bottle, and there's screaming going on, and my mom is helping but they're still screaming of course....

Finally, I find the bottle, in plain sight on the kitchen table, and the baby gets fed, and Ana gets watered, and everything calms down somewhat.

And eventually, we've got baby and Ana in a state of near sleep. A very delicate state of near sleep.

This, of course, is when Jenn and 'dul call back. And since I'm not about to pick up the phone and ruin the moment, they call Asa, ask him to tell me where the bottle is. So here I am, frantically whispering "Asa! Shut up! It's not the time!" and he's trying to give me this truly important information.

Luckily, Evangeline and Ana only woke up a *little* bit due to this whole moment.

Now they're asleep, and there's no more screaming, but... this? This is why I'm more than content to watch children rather than have children. When they're asleep, they're angels. They're darling. They're the best things ever. Getting them to sleep?

Jenn had better not have any more children she wants me to take care of, that's all I have to say about it.

Wouldn't it be fun (in a twisted way) to videotape a bunch of similar experiences, add a narrative about young NT children that is the parallel of the one they did about autistic kids, then send it out all over the place (including to Autism Speaks)? I can just imagine it:

Pseudo-mother: "Ana just kept screaming and screaming and screaming, and it happens all the time, I'm SURE she'll be like this forever, how will she ever marry or hold a job or even go to school!"
*as mother sobs into hankerchief, cut to scene of a four-year-old having a meltdown*
Narrative: "One of the most tragic elements of raising a nonautistic child is that parents find themselves unable to blame the child's distress on a disorder, instead being forced to figure out what the child needs and provide them..."
