Cricket! They've expanded since I got my very first issue from my dad, but it's still the same quality it was then. No ads, and the magazines last ages, more if you actually take care of them like we never did.... And well-written, as well.

I should mention it to people wanting books for "kids who don't read that much". A magazine is reading, and if you're not good at it, it's easier reading - the stories are shorter, and there's no shame in having pictures to match the words. Plus, you get a new one every now and again.

Only problem with these is the price, but that's kinda a side effect of the whole no ads thing. I don't care. I'm going to *find* a way to make sure that Ana (and now Evie!) have subscriptions to the whole set of literary ones, and maybe one or two of the others. I'd do the same for Seth and his brother, but as it is my mom's plan is to split the cost with somebody else, and I can't *do* that with Lizziey, she's all not-here and all.

We pick up a lot of great kids' magazines at the library. My in-laws check out stacks of Muse, Highlights, Cricket and others to amuse the girls when they visit.

For youngest, these are great. She reads at a grade nine level but prefers pictures to enliven her reading. Since chapter books don't cut it, we get a lot of magazines and she is happy as a clam. The library access keeps our budget happy, too!

I used to "take" (as the British say) both Cricket and Odyssey (though, in those days, Odyssey was under other ownership and had, as mascot, a robot called Ulysses 4-11 who looked a lot like Analyzer/IQ9 from Uchû Senkan Yamato/Star Blazers).

Oh, wow! I haven't thought of those magazines in years. We used to read Ladybug all the time when I was younger. The little comics in the back were always my favorite part. Never subscribed to any of the others, though they did look neat.
