"It is a lot of work," admitted Mayra Gomez, 15, as she busily tried to untangle herself from yards and yards of blue bedsheet. "But it's way much better than (a worksheet)."

Can one say that? *thinks on this*

You can say "much better", and you can say "way better" (I wouldn't, but I'm fairly confident that I've heard that), but... way much better?

Hm. And you can say very much, but can you say very much better?

*shrugs* Well, clearly you can. I just never heard it before.

And no, this wasn't just an excuse to use my Sejanus icon.

... Given they quoted the other kid as saying it was funner than other things they could be doing, I didn't even give way much better a second thought. Face it, a lot of kids talk like that.

In any case, it does sound like a neat project.

Like I said, I really didn't give it a second thought. Maybe it's the areas I've grown up in, but the construction didn't seem odd at all to me.

Woah, woah, slow down chickie. If I've heard that exact construction before, it's been awhile. But most of my formative years were in San Leandro, CA, which is right near Oakland, which had been in the news for awhile because they wanted to make Ebonics an official foriegn language class. Then we moved to a suburb of Dallas. Now I live near St. Louis, and I promise you, you hear a lot of interesting usage working in a hotel. I couldn't pull anything in particular, but I know I've walked away some days just shaking my head.

I think some people just... do things like that. Not sure I've heard that exact construction, but one of our managers says on the announcements sometimes, "We hope you've had a really very excellent shopping experience!" It's actually cute when she does it.

It is always a good time for a Sejanus icon

I haven't heard that particular word combination before either. I don't think it's grammatically correct, but after listening to the History of English lectures (if you're interested in hearing a Stanford prof go on for 18 hours and have a high-speed connection, let me know, I'll zip it for you & you can IM me for it), I'm hestiant to make any sweeping declarations. Double negatives were acceptable until fairly recently ("fairly recently" being two or three hundred years ago) and in Middle English, "ask" really was "aks". These tidbits frightented me greatly.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but it makes sense to me.

What he inarguably is, though, is awesome like ten million hot dogs.
