I dug up my Sim City 3000. I love that game. And do you know why?

Subways. I can spend hours fixing up my subway system, making sure everything's connected, eliminating loops. I love me my subways.

I mean, I also like being rich, and having tons of landmarks, but that's easy since I use all the cheat codes I can find.

I really just like playing around with my subway system. Roads are boring. Trains are... well, a nice layer, now that I'm used to them, but not much more interesting than roads. Subways? Subways are coooooool.

I used to play Sim City a lot. Eventually I always ended up destroying my city by means of UFOs or tornados or fires. And I stopped playing much at all when we got OS X and it wouldn't run very fast at all. I never did much with subways, they were always too expensive...

Hmm, I've got the newest sim city and can't get into it at all. My cities always have layout problems and I have no patience for traffic management. Perhaps subways are the answer. I don't remember if I ever used them or not. I much prefer civilization 3, even though I don't know any useful cheats and always lose no matter what. I just never tire of building wonders.

Same here. I used to play SimCity occasionally when I was younger, but I never enjoyed it as much as games like Civilization III and Age of Empires.

Have you ever played Alpha Centauri? It's very similar to Civilization III (both were made by Sid Meier), but it's set in space and therefore infinitely cooler. The different factions are genuinely interesting and diverse, and the different kinds of technology available to learn are awesome. The wonders in it are called secret projects, and finishing them first gives you access to a little movie relating to it. There's also an actual plot to the game that focuses on the "mind" of the planet.

I'd also recommend Rise of Nations if you haven't played it. It's more like Age of Empires than Civilization IIII, so if you've played AoE and didn't like it, I'm not sure you'd like RoN. Still, it has beautiful graphics and a ton of different technologies, weapons, buildings, and the like. Another game in the same vein is Age of Mythology, which is like AoE with gods and goddesses, spells, and mythical creatures.

You've gotten me to dig out my copy of Alpha Centauri now, which is, in fact, God.

Now to go play Gaia and swarm people with highly evolved mindworms early in the game, when there's still fungus everywhere. Hah, that's infinitely more fun than playing any other faction.

SMAC (Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri) is considered by many to be the pinnacle of achievement in the Civilization family of games. Gaians are good, mind the University of Planet, when they have the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm Secret Project in play is pretty fun too. :)

I used to play age of empires all of the time when I was little.. around nine or ten or something. I have no idea what I did with my copy of the game. Hmm. Actually, I may have sold it. I've got the Age of Kings or whatever the sequen was called still around somewhere, though. I prefer civilization to AoE because I generally do better with less units than more. I'm not much of an expansionist. :)

However, I'm now desperate to try out Alpha Centauri. It's older, right? Maybe I'll be able to find it for cheap.

Generally I am not a fan of simulation or strategy games. Adventure games have my heart. However, I'm a total sucker for civilization building sims just because it's so cool to advance technology and culture.

have you tried the "Double Your Pleasure" and "Rise and Rule" mods? they almost make Civ 3 worth playing (ie this is what Civ3 should have been). Mind, I say almost because not even the lovely, talented folk from the DyP/RaR team can save the game from its inherent weaknesses and flaws.

Heh, I am v. easily amused, I guess... I sometimes get annoyed that I have never come close to winning a game in Civ3, but it's never bothered me to the point of not playing it. I will, however, check out both of those mods. Thanks for the tip!
