Seriously. The MC is on a plane, and the business guy nearby (next to him?) is roaring drunk and obnoxious as hell. The Rapture comes, and absolutely no one is duly concerned except for the drunken business man-- who's already been established as a foil.
The FOIL is smarter than everyone else in the ENTIRE books.
Sorry. I just can't understand how such tripe manages to sell so well....
I've read about those people before, but it seems equally implausible every time I hear about it. They scare me.
Also, the article mentioned Rick Santorum, so I feel compelled to seethe in his general direction right now. *seethes* I swear that man thinks he's an evangelical.
My American hosts from a few years back were Left Behind readers who took the rapture quite seriously. One day one of them said, "Won't it be funny when we're taken away and leave nothing but piles of clothes."
Oh and the whole environmental attitude is really screwed up. With America being such a large and influential country its attitude on environmental issues is a global concern. I can't believe there are people out there who believe it doesn't matter because they'll all be taken away before anything bad happens.
I started reading one of them once and god what an awful piece of writing! It was terribly written, the characters were unrealistic... why is it so popular?!
Just so long as it isn't too much like the underwater station in sealab. That thing blows up every other episode.
But no, America is far too far reaching to ever be able to escape without leaving the planet, or assassinating everyone in America. Good luck on either, and if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.
Won't it be funny when that doesn't happen and they'll be going "oh shit, we fucked up bad." Except not that funny. Hopefully I'll be dead by then. :P
Even when I was a Christian I was irritated with the idea of the Rapture. "Don't any of you know that it was made up in the colonial period to attract people to their church!?"
Grr. Not a Christian any more, but I still stand firm on that issue.
I believe the Rapture (or whatever) might come sometime...maybe this hour, maybe this century, maybe not for another 1,000 years. 1,800 years ago, they were already saying Christ was returning and that the signs of the times were right. So...if they'd had the utter gall and destructive technology and consumerism we have today, see we'd already have been wrong.
These people just BAFFLE and indeed scare me. They don't even care about the possibility of their children's futures...or anyone else's...because they ~KNOW~ THEY'RE going to be swept into Heaven VERY soon, and those who don't...pshh they deserve to rot in the Hellish Earth we've destroyed. Utter selfishness and carelessness, I can't stand it.
*pokes hand up* I'll hapily cone to the underwater dome. just let me go research recipies for seaweed. People who believe this tripe... scare me. more ammusing and interesting are hte people who believe the rapture has already been and gone and thye missed out. At least thye have interesting conversations.
Haha. Well, I had no trouble reading The Eye of Argon yet couldn't bring myself to read more than a few pages of any one of the Left Behind books so...
What if everybody else vanished and they didn't, mwa-ha-ha!
Belief in the rapture isn't as common here but I do remember encountering a few who were into it back when I went to youth group and thinking, "where the hell did that come from?"

To make you laugh a bit more about this, why not go to Fundies Say the Darndest Things (http://users.rcn.com/rostmd/winace/fundies/)?
