On anti-HP-hype

A lot of people on my friends list today have posted about how they don't want the new HP book when it comes out. Harry Potter is derivative, a rip-off. It's badly written. It's in serious need of a good editing job. It's overhyped!

Well, yeah. I know!

I have always liked literary fluff. I still have very fond memories of the Baby-Sitters Club books, and of the Sweet Valley Twins series. I will happily read cheesy sci-fi novels with plot holes big enough to drive trucks though. (I also watch Lifetime and Disney made-for-tv movies, which really should give an indication of my taste). Yes, I read and enjoy serious works as well, but I've always felt there was a little bit of fun in reading candy. Or mocking it, whatever.

Am I the only one who sees it that way? Don't take Harry Potter so seriously. Read it, laugh, and move on with your life. Or don't read it. But don't diss those of us who happen to like badly-written books and movies.

Thanks - I don't really like skipping parts of a book but I might just do that. If I take it to dialysis, and don't take a remote for the telly, then I'm going to have to read it. Four hours is a long time to stare at nothing. :0)

For your convenience, I'll sum up the first part of the book for you. Hold on...

SPOILER!!!


Harry goes out walking, gets attacked by dementors, chases them away, finds out that Mrs. Figg is a squib, goes home (with Dudley), almost gets kicked out, doesn't, is confined to his room.

Family goes out to get an award. This turns out to have been a scam. Wizards pick up Harry, take him to the OotP headquarters, which are at Black's house (hidden so that nobody can get in, it's the old fideleus charm).

Harry angsts. Percy has walked out on the family.

Trial, everything's been changed (new time and location), it's a full trial. Lot of pointless stuff is said. An ugly frog-woman is there. Mrs. Figg lies and says she saw the dementors. Harry is exonerated (but a lot of people voted to expel him). Fudge talks to Lucius. Harry sees Broderick Bode. Arthur takes a copy of the Quibbler.

Everyone is happy, they have dinner, Harry sees a picture of the original OotP (nearly all dead or crazy). Molly meets a boggart, sees dead family (the twins are one person, Harry is a member of the family).

Ron and Hermione are made prefects. Twins react with disgust, Ron gets a new broom.

They get on the train.

Yeah, that about sums it up.

Thanks :0) Will definitely give it another try. After all, I can always re-read it from the start when I've finished. Ron gets a new broom, eh? Don't know if I can contain the excitement...lol
