I agree with you about daylight saving time. I was startled, a couple of days ago, by a couple of things in an NPR article (via wbur.org) about daylight saving. One was that in a poll, 50% of people disliked changing clocks twice a year, 10% liked it, and 40% said they had no opinion.

There was also a proposal by a Republican congressman to permanently move the clocks forward by half an hour, but I think he was pulling the reporter's leg, because he didn't say we should split the difference, but "split the baby."

I'm in the minority of people who want to abolish daylight saving and go back to standard time, but I don't feel strongly about that: Boston clock time will be about half an hour off from solar time, the only question is in which direction.

Yup. I wish they'd just pick one - either standard time or daylight savings time and stick with it.
Also, it's notable that there's a portion of the US (granted a small one) that doesn't follow it at all. And most farmers tend to ignore it in rural areas - they go by the sun.

Or just sell stuff they've made on Etsy. They also get paid for not farming in Western Kansas and areas of Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

I live in Arizona where we don't have daylight savings. The vast majority here don't think having the heat of the desert day lasting farther into the evening is a great idea.

I grew up in St. Louis which had daylight savings well before it went nation wide. It was okay in the summer, but going out in the dark in the morning this time of year to wait by the side of the road for the school bus, wasn't great. The change in the fall was okay. But I always felt like crap for weeks getting up an hour earlier in the spring.

I read an interesting suggestion: split the difference. Do a one-time thirty minute advance, and freeze time there. It would put us out of step with a lot of the rest of the world, but is that really such a problem? My phone easily tells me what time it is in other time zones.

I read mention that there's another place or two that's 15 minutes off from the rest of the world.

there are a few that are either 15 or 30 minutes different from the next time zone. they are called offset time zones.

British Columbia has moved to permanent Daylight Savings. Experts are concerned, because it's exposure to morning light that's needed for circadian rhythm regulation in the body. In winter, up here sunrise won't happen til 9 AM at the solstice.

Me, I like noon to be at noon, and to be able to see both the beginning and the end of the day if possible.

There's nothing to stop firms changing their work hours or giving people more flexi-time to go with what hours suit their particular industry.

I actually think it's Standard Time we should ditch instead. Because I don't want it getting light at 3:30 in the morning at the height of summer!

Way too much sun exposure! I'm already 10 hours south of where I grew up, and the difference is really noticeable. :(

I'm fair-skinned, so the farther sound you go, the more intense the UV index. So, farther south of Sacramento is not my ideal. I grew up in Portland, 10 hours north of here. Just for skin safety alone, I prefer that climate.

There's never enough sun in the winter, but in the summer I prefer it being light as late as possible! Someday, I would like to visit Alaska or one of the Scandinavian countries during the White Nights part of summer. :D
