A proposed rule was made to look like red tape reform, but it’s a power grab. It would let Trump fire thousands of key career civil servants with ease (think Schedule F 2.0).

Public comments are open until May 23.

They're taking public comments? Wow! I mean, they will certainly ignore them, but the fact that they're even publishing this policy is impressive.

Presumably there's a law requiring them to take public comments, but I guess it says something that they're still putting on a show of obeying that law.

The fun about this particular rule is that it purports to be a mans of preventing workers from expressing unacceptable political ideologies…by giving political appointees the ability to dismiss them from the civil service if they don't conform to the political appointee's ideology. Makes it pretty obvious that this has nothing to do with poor performance or other such legitimate reasons for dismissing someone.

You're right, sorry. Sometimes we comment to hear ourselves talk.

The difficulties of text communication! *shakesfist at textual interpretations*

Thank you for clarifying.

The crux of the whole thing:

"These positions will remain career jobs filled on a nonpartisan basis. Yet they will be at-will positions excepted from adverse action procedures or appeals. This will allow agencies to quickly remove employees from critical positions who engage in misconduct, perform poorly, or undermine the democratic process by intentionally subverting Presidential directives."

So there's still lip-service to the idea that you can get this job regardless of your party affiliation. But you will lose it if you try to follow the law as written by Congress and as interpreted by the courts; your job is to obey Presidential directives regardless of their basis in or compatibility with the law.

And of course, Democrats have a well-known reputation for following the law as written by Congress and as interpreted by the courts, even when the President disagrees, so it'll save us all a lot of time and trouble if we just don't hire them in the first place.
