Can somebody tell me what the kid did that was so horrible? Because I'm just not seeing it. I *am* seeing some pettiness on the part of the poster, though, notably this:

IB: What type of soup is it?
M (thinking): Didn't you read the menu *on your table*?! (out loud) Sweet Potato and Cummin.
IB: Oh, that sounds good.
M (thinking): Girl, even I don't know exactly what cummin is. Who are you trying to impress?

Wow. She *didn't read the menu*! Yes, she should've, but she didn't. And because she says "oh, that sounds good", she *must* be trying to show off?

No, the kid doesn't sound like the paragon of politeness. Skipping please isn't nice. But it's also not nice to correct other people's manners in public.

She was a child and didn't live up to the polite expectations this waiter had?

After all <sarcasm>EVERY child should know that just ASKING for something nicely isn't enough, you HAVE to say PLEASE.</sarcasm>

Well, the OP thought she was around 10. So she should know to say please.

But it's not worthy of a whole post about it. And, seriously, it's far ruder to correct her like that in public. If she'd said something like "hey, gimme a *blank*", sure, correct her, but if she goes "may I have *blank*", just let it slide.

Yes, why ask a child to uphold a politeness level you wouldn't ask an adult to? If a waiter refused to serve an adult until they said please they'd be fired.
