because one of ours just broke. It's probably not *actually* irreparable, but honestly, the amount of effort vs. value isn't adding up. Nevertheless, we do still need a bookcase there. As it is, our books are stacked sideways! Which, come to think of it, may be a factor in the decreased longevity of the bookcases, but it's hardly my fault they apparently are sold with too few shelves and a lack of durability to be useful for the one thing I want a bookcase for, which is storing books. I'm not putting objets d'art on these things, I don't need three feet between shelves or even two feet between shelves.

OMG - right? My bookshelves are nice, but they are SO deep and there is SO much space vertically between shelves - my paperbacks are stacked horizontally and 2-3 books deep!

There really needs to be some sort of pull out system to make use of this space? I don't have room for 3x as many bookshelves - so just having more shelves vertically would help, but also some sort of "layering" system with like shelves that slide left and right maybe?

Those exist like filing cabinets for books - Google pull out bookshelves. I would suggest metal racks as a better solution for books like in libraries, but I’m also a big fan of glass doors for bookshelves because of dust.
