Happy fall! Happy autumn!
Technically, the equinox used to be considered the middle of fall. Fall started at what we'd now consider the middle of summer. I think. And Halloween was the beginning of winter, with the solstice ("Midwinter") being the middle, not the beginning. Which makes sense. Why should the shortest day be the START of winter? Wouldn't the start be when you notice the days are getting short, and it's really getting cold out?

Date: 2004-09-25 06:54 pm (UTC)Of course, you can't say "fall-al" like you can say "autumnal". But leaves don't autumn either.

Date: 2004-09-26 07:27 am (UTC)Autumn To May is a folk song my mom sings to her and I guess everytime she hears of it she thinks of autumn tomato and doesn't like thinking of autumn tomato. That's the best translation of that I can give! :)

Date: 2004-09-25 12:50 pm (UTC)I say fall starts in early September, when it starts to get cooler. Winter starts December 1, because November is a fall month and December is a winter month.

Date: 2004-09-26 01:30 pm (UTC)I never really understood either why the shortest day was the beginning of winter, but then it never bothered me much because LA seems generally most wintery from December to February. (My sister and I like to say that we have two seasons: summer and January.) So it doesn't make sense, but then again it does.
