The details are pretty horrific, not to mention infuriating, and the prosecutor and police chief involved ought to be fired. I don't even... I don't even know what to do.

Comparing this to how the regime of Texas reacted to a seven-day prison sentence for a white hairdresser convicted of Barbering While Plaguey (and who only got THAT after a defiant refusal to show any remorse to the Uppity Black Judge), one questions whether the State of Georgia's penalty for Jogging While Black might be a LITTLE too harsh. /sarcasm

I also missed when it first happened. I could've sworn it happened last week, not MONTHS ago. :( Kind of speaks to my privilege as well.

I go for walks in random neighborhoods ALL THE TIME. And feel completely safe doing so. But most people in this town look like me...

Even if you were a minority I suspect you're a little safer taking a walk than jogging, and probably safer from that sort of problem as a woman than a man (though more at risk for other problems). But honestly, he should've been safe, period.

Black men have also been shot just for walking, but you're right that it doesn't seem to be a problem for black women. (That I've heard of, and I'm not saying black women haven't been victims of violence because they absolutely have. Look at Sandra Bland.) I'm not trying to make this about me, btw, just pointing out my privilege. Which shouldn't exist, but it does, and that's why he wasn't safe. It's sickening.

All the folks who found this story and amplified it helped put enough pressure so that these two murderers are now being charged. Now let's see if they get convicted.

God, I wonder what even prompted them to do this. I mean, yes, bigotry, but it doesn't sound like they've murdered more than one black person in cold blood, so. (Then again, who knows?)

It's those kinds of things that you look at, boggle at, and then realize that there's a good chance that there won't be anything meaningful done about it, barring massive and sustained public pressure from the people they actually care about. Aigh.
