I kinda feel like this deserves its own post for the sheer level of WTF BULLSHIT IS THIS in it:

A ‘curvier’ high school swimmer won — only to be disqualified because of a ‘suit wedgie’

I don't even know what to say here.

oh good lord. if they are actually so concerned about exposing the buttocks, mandate that all swimsuits go down the legs - boy-cut or whatever that's called nowadays

At this point we shouldn't have HS sports. No football might just get people's attention.

JFC seems to be the only reasonable response. The farther down I read the story, the more angry I got. Sexism *and* racism, for those who really want their female high school athletes hit with as many isms as possible!

This is also where I get on my soapbox about swimsuit fit: I am longer from shoulder to crotch than the default swimsuit measurements. This results in wedgies and escaping breasts. I used to be able to buy competition suits in long, but they seem to have stopped making them. The ruling is total bullshit but I also bet that the suit is too short. Sizing up *does not* help.

I've not had a suit in longer than I've been in media fandom. I'm a half-size so the opposite and yep, that means only the most modest cuts don't risk gaping in ways that NOPE.

But yes, you don't get to penalize girls and young women for There Are No Clothes. Because the same people that get all about Distracting the Boys would decide Evil walked the halls if the distaff all crossdressed. Shorts are cut too high, there are no shirttails, pockets...

I read that article! I especially loved the parent who TOOK PICTURES OF THE GIRL AND SENT IT AROUND TO OTHER PARENTS to show they disapproved of her ass. WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT?

It's gross and that parent should be banned from meets or have their camera confiscated at the start of every meet. I mean, ffs. But preferably banned from meets.

I mean, also true. But taking pictures of a minor in a swimsuit and sending them out and saying LOOK AT HOW INAPPROPRIATELY SEXY THESE ARE is also...inappropriate of you. In a prurient way. I mean, honestly, just start looking for witch marks already, you're halfway there.

this reminds me of that creepy shit a while back where some people got all freaked out about the idea that some high school girls might have been wearing thong type underpants at their prom. Their idea of dealing with it? they forced these girls to get checked on the way in!

Happy ending -- the school pitched a fit and the swimmer's win was reinstated and the person who did the disqualification was to be dismissed. (They were supposed to report swimsuit malfunctions to a team's coach and didn't do that at all.)

Can't find the article that said that the ref in question was fired, though. *mutter*

You know it's bad when you stare at it, contemplate, and go: "not the worst thing I've seen the muni censor" and just keep going. Volunteer ref/etcs are the worst offenders because of muni regs.

(Sorry, I remember this stuff going on 15 years ago when it was my friends on those swim teams.)

It's from Carole & Tuesday.

"Carole & Tuesday is a Japanese anime series produced by Studio BONES that airs on Netflix. It was created and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop fame. The show began airing for 24 episodes on Netflix Japan April 10th, 2019. The first 12 episodes were released on Netflix worldwide on August 30, 2019.

Set 50 years after humans have colonized the planet Mars, our story starts with the very sheltered and innocent Tuesday running away from home and heading to the largest city on the planet, Alba City. Once there she quickly learns that its not an easy place for a girl with no plans.

Carole is a young woman barely making her way in the city, and has just lost her job, again. With nothing left to do she begins playing her keyboard and singing on a bridge, where a disheartened Tuesday happens to also be and the two girls instantly connect over Carole's song."

The article doesn't illuminate anything about what the reasoning might have been. Like, does a suit wedgie give someone a competitive advantage in some way? Or was it suddenly "yay, athleticism, OH GOD TOO SEXY TOO SEXY", because that has implications about the people watching and what they're paying attention to compared to what they should be paying attention to.

Oh FUCK no! It was THE SCHOOL that chose and issued the swimsuits, and certainly no athlete WANTS a wedgie in the midst of a competition! This is some serious WTF bullshit indeed, and I hope a major viral shit-storm descends on the skeevy assholes responsible. Body-shaming teenagers is absolutely unacceptable; these creeps need to keep their eyes and their dirty-minded opinions to themselves, and the school needs to order new swimsuits for everyone, that show neither cleavage nor butt-crack on anybody.
