but I wasn't able to leave a comment somewhere because "recaptcha v. 1 is shutdown".

Meh, I'll leave it here, as it relates to the Firefox debacle: In this particular case, it seems to be a glitch rather than deliberate. You might still be thrilled to nope out, but it doesn't seem to be intentional behavior.

Which Firefox debacle? Oh, that one. I was a little unhappy, too - wrote about it, tonight.

So if a Dreamwidthian has captchas enabled but recaptcha is shut down the whole "leaving a comment" thing just fails because there's no getting past the captcha, I guess?

Blerrrgghhhh - I forgot to disable that (that was just on the other day for just that day, for Reasons). I'll go disable it right now - thanks ETA: disabled.

I'd started seeing about a year ago (maybe longer ago than that) messages on DW captchas saying that recaptcha would close down soon and hoped someone might replace it with a new system. Or just disable the ability to use image captchas altogether (text-based tests still let people through, right? I should suggest this in Support, just disabling the image-based system in favor of that one).

I'd be happy to but if you got it go for it.

Yes! So we shall. I really wish they'd disabled recaptcha when they did the last code push (especially if they had or have no replacement); when it makes it impossible for people to leave a comment, that's an issue.

(I was wondering why my DW'd been so damn quiet, not that it's ever a hotspot of activity, but still - so next time I do that, since the system hasn't removed recaptcha, I'll have to hope I remember to only enable the text-based captcha.)

https://github.com/dreamwidth/dw-free/issues/2331 (and I don't use either style, but I think text-based captchas should be unaffected by this).

Cool, it's already been assigned (to Mark, no less) so hopefully they push some sort of fix for it fairly soon. Thanks for the link!

I ETA'd the post after reading comments to yours. Kinda wish I'd hit my Reading List before writing it to see all that but then again, the post's done and just about ready to publish the next time Mozilla *does* pull that sort of thing on us, so my future self can thank me, then.

Also, didn't know you were a fellow Fx user. That makes, on my access list alone, four of us that I know of. *passes Kleenex around*

Yeah, Google (you mean you don't like using Chrome, right?)...I don't like it, either. I'm in Waterfox for now, but can't keep using it beyond tonight because I've about:configed it so it can't update itself or my add-ons - which is for design work I do that requires add-ons to work that were made back in the Stone Age - so it's not really safe.

So I'll probably check workarounds, go, "Yeah, right" then toss a coin to choose between a new copy of ESR (oh, wait...I hope ESR isn't going to have these problems, too. Haven't used it in forever) or running another side-by-side copy of Waterfox without the edits I've made to it.

Also Firefox lets me impose my own font on webpages, so e.g. I see Facebook in Garamond. Tres nice.
