The lack of more mobile-friendly theme options is really killing me. I did manage to find this (https://www.dreamwidth.org/mobile/), which renders everything to text-only and a LITTLE easier to read/comment. It still doesn’t really resize anything, though, so this comment box (for instance) still has to be manually adjusted so I can see what I’m typing on my phone.

I do feel that dw's mobile app is its biggest flaw but at least it looks ok in browser form online rather than the way lj used to look. Hopefully this influx will push them to progress and possibly give them the financial boost to do it too.

My impression is that lack of progress has a lot to do with RL things interfering + lack of devs + working with 20 year old code. There is a limit to how fast they'll ever be able to update.

As ylvaine's post you linked to mentions, there is a "show all posts in my style" option that allows you to get rid of really mobile-unfriendly styles.

I remember picking my current scheme a while ago because I find it quite readable on mobile (and the browser), but I suspect other people's standards for viewable on browser are different than mine. (I don't like too much white space on a small screen.)
