that now that the obvious scheming villain has dropped his charming, courteous mask, I suddenly find I like him a lot more? The main characters are all "Oh! But I thought you were our friend! And you've betrayed us! And not for good reasons, like if you really think this cause is just or something, you betrayed us just for money!" and I'm thinking "Wow, you've turned into an actual, likeable person, and I completely understand why you thought money was a good reason to betray people even if I agree that it was reprehensible."

Maybe it's because his charm was super smarmy before and now he's not because why bother?

Edit: OMG. I am talking about a book, not about real-world politics. Ick.

It's pretty good! Took awhile to get to the adventure part, and then 10% of the book is taken up with "historical" footnotes from some distant future, but I enjoyed it, footnotes and all.

But even I pegged the obvious villain(s) within three sentences, and I'm usually pretty slow about things like that. If that's the sort of thing that's a dealbreaker for you, be warned. (It's not for me!)

Seriously, he ends up the most likeable villain I've read about in a while. Not affable with the mask off, just... I like him.

The main character adamantly doesn't agree even a little, and I'm not certain the author agrees, but whatever. What does she even know!?
