somebody was talking about the new Picard role (who wasn't, right?) and mentioned that they'd already seen people grumbling that TNG was the worst Trek, Picard the worst captain. Which is a viewpoint I've literally never heard espoused before, but I guess there's always somebody.

So we never ever get tired of making Best Trek Captain lists, right? It's polltime!

I went back and forth on the best Trek question, and finally decided to go with the one I personally enjoy the most. In terms of objective quality, I think TNG and DS9 are more or less tied for first.

For a dubious captain, how about Decker?

I haven't actually seen most of Enterprise. Or Voyager, for that matter. I do hope to watch more of Enterprise sometime, though!

Anyhow, I have Serious Thoughts about who's the best Captain, but I won't go on and on. (Other than that Kirk is way better than people think. But I still go with Sisko due to communication and community-building. And Jake.)

If I managed to maintain some degree of sentient, sapient decency, Skrain Dukat would drive me to mutiny. I hope.

Sure, Voyager has the absurd plots. But outside of the one mass casualty event in the first couple of episodes, how many actual deaths of crew members which are not reversed in the same episode are there in the series? I think it's pretty few. On that count, I think Janeway wins.

A worthy refusal. I cannot believe they didn't notice that and Not Do That.

I saw none of Enterprise and heard they mangled the timeline. I also didn't see later Voyager due to UPN finally existing (the CBS affiliate had been broadcasting it in my market) slightly outside of signal range.

on Other for mutiny: JJTrek Kirk.
(On Borg Queen: well, 10 of 30 in my icon has decided that she's really kind of a Borg Princess, and since she's not inclined to go back to the Collective anymore (despite missing the heck out of it in many ways), the inclination to nanite-ly arm-wrestle for control seems likely... That counts as mutiny, right?)

Have not yet seen Disco. *sigh*

For fave series, I'm honestly inclined to think Star Trek Online should get an honorable mention!

I don't know if they mangled the timeline on Enterprise? There were a lot of things that I was "hrm" about, but I wound up really loving the arc for Vulcan Society. Also, certain episodes whose descriptions were... dubious... I wound up investing in more than expected, because the actors were pretty good, I thought.

On the other hand, I am also guilty of calling Enterprise the Captain Shran and T'Pol Death Glare show. >_>

Why is Sosko the most effective captain?

Sisko is mainly just really, really incredibly good at managing shit -

like if every job in the world that has “manager” in the name had sisko doing it then i’m pretty sure the world would actually work

he just continually takes this staff of like a psychotic ex-terrorist religious fanatic, a 300 year old egomaniac, a ridiculous self-obsessed manchild, a ridiculous self-obsessed klingon manchild, a security guard with a raging god complex, and a fucking Quark, on a space station that doesn’t even work when he gets it, and against all probability manages to get all of them them to more or less consistently do more or less their actual jobs.

like, while fighting a war, fixing the planet full of religious extremists, and being space jesus
- source, though I always say he's more of a Space Moses

The one that bothered me so much that I stopped watching was Threshold, wherein going over the Warp Limit turns Janeway and Paris into big ol' slugs. Who mate and have kids. The kids are then never mentioned at the end of the episode, which for some reason was a bridge too far for me.

I've been around long enough to have imprinted hard on TOS, and have always found TNG to be weak tea (Earl Grey, hot) by comparison.

DS9 was sort of the redheaded stepchild of the franchise in its day -- I suspect that it got away with as much good stuff as it did because nobody important was looking at it very hard.

It's hard to choose the most effective captain! I feel like a parent ("I love you all for different reasons") They all have their flaws, but they all have their strengths. I think I leaned toward Picard as my personal favorite for a long time, but having just done a watchthrough of Deep Space Nine, I've really warmed to Sisko too.
