So, here's a Roseanne question

Bearing in mind that I haven't seen the new episodes and don't intend to.

I thought that in the (original) last season we found out at the end that it was all a crazy dream sequence and she hadn't won a million dollars and also her husband had died.

Am I wrong in thinking from commentary that in this new season she's still out a million dollars but her husband is alive?

Are we just forgetting that season entirely?

I was amused by the way they appeared to lampshade Dan's death in the promos. (I was actually interested in the series...right up to the point where I learned that both Roseanne the character and Roseanne the actor were Trump supporters. How I'd missed/forgotten that about the actor is beyond me.)

Yeah, I wasn't that interested but might've watched out of curiosity if not for that. It's not even the Trump supporting part per se as the transphobic comments.

Yep, that's why I chose not to watch. I recorded it and everything, then deleted it. Didn't help that I was reminded of why I'd stopped watching the original...Roseanne is basically the television brain child of Trump and Archie Bunker, but without Norman Lear.

The original had some good writers behind it -- when she wasn't firing them left and right.

As far as I can tell from the reviews and promos? They've basically erased the last season of the series as if it didn't happen.

The demise of the nation state I've seen several articles about the idea that the days of the nation-state are numbered, and this is the only one that looks at all hopeful. Some of them claim to be hopeful, and talk about the advantages of smaller regional democracies and city-states, which are IMHO a deeply terrible idea, because while large modern nation states do a fairly poor job of defending against predation by transnational corporations, a city-state is simply defenseless prey to the likes of Nestle or Exxon-Mobile.

I've had that article open for a few days because I wanted to get to it. His thoughts on a new concept of citizenship are super interesting (especially citizenship as a form of wealth inheritance! YES, THAT.), but I'm not sure how that or his other proposals move toward reality.

Re: citystates, now that left-leaning areas of the US have a reason to want to enforce states' rights, we're seeing some interesting breakdown. Forgive me if the details aren't exactly right, but I was really struck by California recently:
1. Federal government gives federal immigration enforcement agency (ICE) more power/data/access
2. California state government refuses to cooperate with ICE
3. Some right-leaning cities in California pass anti-sanctuary bills and work to collaborate with ICE

The story I heard was that the previous seasons (including Dan's death from a heart attack) were from a screenplay Roseanne had written and kept in the garage. So ... it was all in Roseanne's imagination. Dan is alive, John Goodman is alive. IDK; I'm not watching it either.

"Mulatto"? you have got to be kidding me! this is an EXTREMELY racist word; are you aware of its origins? It's based on the Nazi-esque idea that (it makes me ill even to type this) Black and White people are two different species because it's based on "mule".
Navi are supposed to be reptiles, why do they have breasts?
also, I get really tired of seeing movies where a thirty year old woman gets repeatedly referred to in the dialogue as a "young girl". A young girl is a fucking SIX YEAR OLD.

1. The Navi aren't earthly, so they're not reptiles or mammals. Who knows what their evolutionary path was?

2. I give the "young girl" a pass in much older works - that's how Anne of Green Gables refers to herself when she's, like, sixteen - but yeah, in modern works it's prepubescent.

3. While the term mulatto is now offensive in English (and was when he wrote that description), that etymology does not require believing that blacks and whites are literally different species.
