The thing about Sherman Alexie is just devastating because I'm from Spokane. I think there's an art installation or something downtown that has words from a poem he wrote.

I also love Smoke Signals to bits. ;_;

Hee!

(The noises animals make in different languages has always been very interesting to me. With my kids growing up trilingual, it was always neat to see which ones remained pretty close -- dogs, cows -- and which ones didn't even necessarily contain the same sounds -- e.g. frogs, horses, roosters).

On a much less amusing note, oh man, I hadn't heard about the #metoo thing with Sherman Alexie. Damn. :/

Boiled vegetables were a staple in my school cafeteria lunches, and they were always bland and unpalatable. I definitely support adding seasonings to make food actually taste like food.

I read the Swedish oinker one, 'cause I'm Swedish. I don't know why normal bilingualness made the news though.

Everyone I've known who was brought up bilingual was actually WORSE than a normal native speaker, in both languages. "International schools" only make it worse. The thing about them having higher brain plasticity or whatever might be true, but they also don't seem to have the logical "language-learning" skills that a person who's learnt that second language from scratch does (as in, bilingual kids I've met in ex. English and Swedish can't draw even simple connections between English and Swedish, despite them being relatively extremely related languages, because they "just know" them and didn't "learn" them).

Aside from that most kids don't seem to actually realize that they can use their second language in situations not relating to their own family (like, say, watch Russian youtube videos), and they don't seem to read much in either language. It's just a weird trend I've noticed...

I've personally been friends with around 10 and have met more but only talked with them a few times (classmates, friends of friends or people I quickly dropped as friends etc). So not the whole world, I know.

the Sherman Alexie business was really disturbing. Maybe this is dumb but I get a lot more upset if a celebrity I like gets caught doing creepy shit like that than if it's somebody I never liked in the first place.

How DARE they.  Don't they KNOW that accusation equals guilt?!  Mere accusation should forever quell ANY inconvenient male…  and women are NEVER harassers!  ALWAYS victims!

Swallow whole, as directed.  For further information please re-read.

- I like how even these people are calling it “the post-#MeToo era.”

You've had enough attention for one day, Comrade Rose - sit down.  Yes, there, next to Cindy Sheehan.

I did ours a week ago today, our NM state return was deposited a couple of days ago (without me receiving notification!) and I'm still waiting on my Federal refund.

I did it myself through H&R Block online, it cost me about $100, whereas it cost about $250 to take in the papers and have them do it last year.
