I think Hermione's more practical than creative. I see her as someone who probably reads fiction more for academic value than "OMG THIS IS SO GOOD" value. Which has merit; a lot of my literature courses in college were far more centered around academic outlooks than on the stories and characters themselves. (However, these instructors liked fiction, that just wasn't the point of those particularly classes.) But I do think it explains why she might prefer nonfiction over fiction, if her ventures into fiction are purely academic.
