my mother realized she wasn't sure if a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan is called a "Savoyard" or not. (That is the correct term.) I had to call Jenn and ask her, because it was driving the two of us batty. They're named after the Savoy, where G&S operas were performed.

Which I guess means that fans of Shakespeare are called Globetrotters. I am very much in favor of this.

Savoyard is also the name of a dialect of Arpitan, spoken by a few thousand people at the border of Italy and France.

Savoiardi are ladyfinger biscuits. Same region, I guess, the Duchy of Savoy.

Now I want tiramisu.

I like this terminology and will be applying it more widely.

Do you suppose the original G/S fans had in mind the little boys with trained marmots when they adopted the name?
