As you know, most cats will not put up with too much shit before they defend themselves aggressively, thus teaching an important lesson about respect (https://ballastexistenz.wordpress.com/2009/12/18/dealing-with-cats-part-1-what-is-respect/).
Dogs are not that way. Dogs will put up with all kinds of shit from their humans. It doesn't make the shit any less cruel. A pet is not a toy, and both your girls are old enough to understand that.
