The original is Thumbelina (http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/schoolradio/pdfs/transcripts/thumbelina.pdf), who was a flower fairy brought up by a human woman.

My father's family being Danish, I grew up with the stories of Hans Christian Anderson, and we had both walnut trees and rose bushes in our yard in California, so I made a lot of walnut-shell fairy-beds when I was little, and some rather elaborate fairy encampments as I grew older.
