Date: 2015-09-20 06:55 pm (UTC).... one of my friends has a cat named Jessie. Did she commit microaggression against me by 'sharing' that fact? Since the name 'Simba' means lion in Swahili, apparently Africans associate it with animals too - so what? 'Leo' means lion in Latin; ought a person to "freeze with embarrassment" after saying "Hey, my dog is named Leo too!" to someone named Leo? Or... only if the human Leo is black???
Ha, "unhelpfully shared". About 80% of the things humans 'share' in casual conversation are unhelpful, and plenty of them could be perceived as 'debasing and culturally insensitive' by someone looking for reasons to take offense where none was intended. The concept of microaggressions is extremely useful in identifying people with whom there is no point trying to have conversations because they will find some reason to take offense no matter what you say - even 'unhelpfully' telling them the name of your dog.
I suppose it would be 'helpful' sharing if the dog came bounding in like a big muddy lion, and one yelled "Down, Simba, down!"....? Or would that, too, be interpreted as a covert statement of white supremacy? Maybe there ought to be an Approved International List of pet names, so nobody feels degraded and oppressed by finding out that somebody's dog has the same name as they do.
The stupid, it burns.
