Made kugel for breakfast today.

Jenn laughed when I first said I wanted to, and said it was just so strange (in the good way) to randomly decide I wanted to make this dish I'd never had before from a cuisine that is no part of our cultural heritage. But I wanted to make it for pretty much the same reason I want to make grits, because its fun to try something I've read about but never eaten. (Within reason. Balut may intellectually be no different from eating eggs or chicken, but I don't think I want to try it anyway, no matter HOW much I read about it!)

It came out pretty well, though I had to fiddle with the recipe somewhat because all the recipes made about 3 times as much kugel as I thought we could reasonably eat. As it is, cutting the recipe down to 1/3 still made twice as much as we ate!

The nieces were picky about it, though, something that has been happening more and more at mealtime, so we had to talk to them a bit about not being rude and refusing to try something you haven't had before, or claiming sight unseen that a new food (one that you had said smelled good before you heard it wasn't pancakes!) couldn't possibly be good, or picking at food at the table. They took the lecture pretty well, though, so that's good.

If you're an American citizen, and haven't voted yet, get out and do so!

Nobody's running for any office here either--we had some unopposed town council-type positions on the ballot, plus some initiatives. We have to vote at home and pay for our own [expletive] stamps to mail it in, though.

I tried kugel some time back and I just can't be having with sweet noodles. I ate it, so as not to waste (cf. ellenbarathi's comment) but I haven't made it again.

Does America not have such a thing as Freepost? (Where postage has already been paid by the recipient - either a pre-printed envelope, or you write FREEPOST and the account number on the envelope if using your own envelope. For example, if I lose my work ID/pass there are instructions on the back telling the finder that they can send it back freepost.)

And if it does have such a thing (under whatever name) then why on earth is it not used for postal votes!?* Surely that's one of the most basic applications of it. Voting should be easy and cheap.

*Obviously I'm aware you didn't come up with this policy. But I wondered if there's an official justification.
