Made kugel for breakfast today.

Jenn laughed when I first said I wanted to, and said it was just so strange (in the good way) to randomly decide I wanted to make this dish I'd never had before from a cuisine that is no part of our cultural heritage. But I wanted to make it for pretty much the same reason I want to make grits, because its fun to try something I've read about but never eaten. (Within reason. Balut may intellectually be no different from eating eggs or chicken, but I don't think I want to try it anyway, no matter HOW much I read about it!)

It came out pretty well, though I had to fiddle with the recipe somewhat because all the recipes made about 3 times as much kugel as I thought we could reasonably eat. As it is, cutting the recipe down to 1/3 still made twice as much as we ate!

The nieces were picky about it, though, something that has been happening more and more at mealtime, so we had to talk to them a bit about not being rude and refusing to try something you haven't had before, or claiming sight unseen that a new food (one that you had said smelled good before you heard it wasn't pancakes!) couldn't possibly be good, or picking at food at the table. They took the lecture pretty well, though, so that's good.

If you're an American citizen, and haven't voted yet, get out and do so!

Sheesh, what's not to like about kugel for breakfast; it's like Jewish cheesecake - admittedly slightly weird due to the noodles, but the world is full of weird noodle recipes, and a lot of them are very tasty.

Good for you for having the talk! Your nieces are getting too old to still take food for granted, or disrespect the efoort of the person who made it for them. There's a lot of people out there living on stale bread and ramen noodles. There's a lot who'd be grateful to have even that much. Nobody is entitled to fresh home-cooked meals served by someone who loves them.

*sigh* I hate this voting a straight Democratic ticket. It feels like a mockery of Democracy, that it doesn't even matter who the candidates are, because I'm not actually voting for any of them; I'm only voting against the Republican Party.

Well, I always take the time to check out the policies just in case I like the other guy better and... No, I still don't.

Honestly, the one change I'd like to see in our election system is to allow us to pick as many candidates as we like per ballot. That would help an awful lot to break the insane two partiness of our system.
