And Jenn? You still owe me $23.

Here. Let me just say that it's fascinating, if depressing.

Edit: Yes, I know they eventually link to the Jerusalem Post. You can find a username and password here.

Gifted kids are supposed to get IEPs. Kids with behavioural problems are supposed to get IEPs. Kids with learning disabilites are supposed to get IEPs. Really, as near as I can tell, any kid in any sort of special program is supposed to get an IEP.

Now you know. This has been a public service announcement.

If I ever get off my ass and find it, I'll post interesting tidbits from my IEP, but don't hold your breath.

This one, taken from very nearly everyone. W00t!!!!!

And this one, which I'm copying wholesale, from Prezzey )

The two have nothing to do with one another, but I didn't think that repeating the good news this late was worth an entire post by itself.

I was watching BSG the other day (of course), and at one point Madam President has a vision. Or a hallucination, really, but when she talks to the priestess about this (that's another religious thing, she doesn't go to a doctor with her hallucination, she goes to a priest) she's told "That's just like what Pythia described". We don't know who Pythia is, so of course poor Madam President is forced to ask "Who is Pythia?" to lead the priestess into a long discussion of who Pythia is, when she lived, what she did, and what she said.

Fine, fine. Except that later, Baltar says he "hasn't read Pythia since the sixth grade". Um, what? And Madam President was a teacher, no less. If this is something you read in the sixth grade, shouldn't there at least be name recognition? Just like if I mention a Trojan horse, you all know what I mean, even those of you who never read Homer.

Now, I understand why poor Madam President had to do this, because somewhere or another we had to find out who Pythia is, but why couldn't've been done more subtly?

"You've been reading Pythia, right?"
"No... actually *embarassed laugh*, I've never had a chance, and I'm really quite ignorant. Why do you ask?"
"Well, as you know, Pythia was a seer who lived 3,000 years ago...."

Instead, we have to sit around and wonder why this former teacher is missing basic information.

Birthdays are coming in May. So, in case anybody gets a windfall (*laughs*) and doesn't have anybody else to spend it on...

One wishlist for toys.
One for books. Focus on picture books, please.

And, as always, I am more than willing to beg for accept used toys and books which were enjoyed but which now sit and wait to be loved again. Even if you don't want to send them my way, please consider donating them to a reputable charity - a program which gives them to poor schools and children, or hospitals, or libraries.

This has been a blatant beg. You won't see another until the beginning of May. Promise.

Edit: That said, considering the sheer number of items on my wishlist, I really wish I could rank them on a scale of 1-10 instead of just 1-5.

You know me, always looking for new books.

Never read it, but now I want to check it out )

Many of the children reading this book, or having this book read to them, may be living in an, ahem "non-traditional" family. That's even despite the fact that it's getting promoted as being gay-friendly for having exactly two families with presumably gay parents - and those families, by all accounts, aren't even very noticeable. How spiteful are they, that they would call this immoral, or repugnant, so much so that these babies and their loving families can't be seen by the precious offspring? Are these people really so small-minded that they can only think of teh sexx0rs? When they see a man and a pregnant woman, do they automatically think about all the fucking that went on to get that baby? Do they consider this every time they view their children? I truly hope not. So why can't they put that out of their minds to read this book? If it must come up with their children who talk about balloons, and candy, and occasionally (they must!) their families, why not say "some people do things we don't approve of" and leave it at that? Would anybody get away with saying "OMG! It showed a biracial couple, and my child just isn't ready for that, my child is interested in toys"? Would it even cross somebody's mind to complain that the book features various children of different races?

*sighs*

Most of the reviews seem to be positive. All the one star ones, I listed. There's also one three-star one with the same complaint, but said more fairly Read more... )

Of course, the "I even have gay friends" comment sounds to me a lot like "I don't hate blacks, I have black friends, I just don't want them to be paid better than me or live where I do", but at least it's a start.

And now I'm having fun marking all those reviews as unhelpful, even when, in reality, they were very helpful. Go me.

Edit: This is one of my favorites )

About drugging kids with ADD/ADHD.

Of course, it's always easier to throw a pill at a kid than to actually treat the problem, isn't it? Sometimes, the medications work. Often, they don't, or the side effects aren't worth it. That's what people don't always seem to get.

But you mustn't tell Jenn :)

Now, quick, I need everybody to send me here in my journal text of or links to their favorite nursery rhymes (or jump rope rhymes, or fingerplaysongs, or just poems and quotes from childhood - so long as it's in the public domain). Danke dearly.

Feel free to ask around as well.
