Quite often, people want to post a link to a journal entry, or to a particular comment - but they get the wrong link. So I'm here to explain how to do it properly.

And yes, I know my use of URL and page was a bit confused there. Sowwee.

Warning, PDF file.

They always say, when encouraging parents to encourage kids to read, that parents should "appear to take an interest" in the kid's books. *laughs* We had to steal our books back from our parents if we ever wanted to read them! Do you know how friggin' annoying it is to find your mom or dad reading the book you "lost" right as you got to the good part???

Stupid advice.

We spent fully half an hour discussing the schedule and getting handouts. Honestly, the number of trees which have been slaughtered for this class is staggering.

And look at one of the handouts. It starts off "Ladies Nite Open Mic". Now, I'm not going to tackle the abomination which is nite, since I know they did that on purpose. But what about the Ladies? Shouldn't that be "ladies'" instead? Why, yes, yes it should! Morons.

It gets better, though. You didn't think I'd make an entire post just to bitch about one lost apostrophe, did you?

Ever feel like your voice is not being heard? The Revolutionary Alliance of Womyn (RAW) in conjunction with the Women's Center is sponsoring an Open MIc for all womyn and myn.

First, there should be a comma after "Revolutionary Alliance of Womyn (RAW). But more importantly...

WOMYN AND MYN???

WTF?

I grudgingly don't complain about "womyn". I understand the twisted logic behind that spelling, along with its lack of etymology. Personally, I'd prefer to just bring back were and wereman, but people don't listen to me... However, back on topic, what the fuck is up with "myn"? How does that prove anything other than that you think ys are cool? Is the E evil? Did it slaughter innocents? Must w boycott th most popular lttr in the Nglish alphabt?

DOWN WITH... UH... THAT LTTR!

I'm so laughing at that flyer that I won't even (vn) get into the discussion itself.

People just collect articles for me, don't they?

Honestly, I'd already noticed the expansion of y'all. I still prefer "youse", though.

Guys?

If you want people to do your homework for you, or to help you cheat on your homework... please, ask in a way that preserves our integrity.

Correct: OMG! I have this impossible assignment. I've worked really hard on it, but I can't figure out what songs are most like the book "Catch 22". Help?
Incorrect: OMG! I have this impossible assignment! It's due really soon, and of course I couldn't read the entire book! Tell me what songs are most like "Catch 22".

Do you see the difference?

Good.

I must link to [livejournal.com profile] yonmei's post which directed me to this other post on childhood classics various people just couldn't get into.

Until I do, let me add my bit to the fray:

Some people like to read. Read more... )

While I know this isn't the same as transgender-ism (transsexualism? transsomethingism?), it's certainly close enough for this question to pop into my mind.

In many societies, the gender roles and images are different from what they are here. For example, I remember reading in Jenn's anthro book that... some random society has the men characterized as being emotional, and the women as practical. Others have men devoted to makeup, while women disdain it, and so on. If you're somebody who in this society is placed in the wrong gender roles, would you still be transgendered if you had been born in a society where, say, the roles were very much reversed?

Yes, my terminology kinda sucks. Sorry. Feel free to correct.

And yes, I'm aware that this is all speculative, since there's no way for any of us to turn back the clock and try it.

I hope this doesn't come out the wrong way, but...

Dear god, how many of youse guys are transgendered/ambiguiously gendered/whatever????

I'm now up to four people on my friends list (that I know of). And I love you all dearly, and want everyone to be as happy as is reasonably possible. I just didn't know so many of my friends were... whatever the word is (I'm still not sure about that). Kinda like when I realized so many of my friends were religious, but different. (Actually, it's a tossup about which surprised me more.)

I mean, I understand why so many of my friends are autists, because I actively seek out autistic friends. And I understand why so many of my friends are bi, because most people are. But I'm a bit surprised at the number of people who identify as transgendered/whatever. I understand vaguely why various people are trans, but I'm not sure how chance led me to have more trans friends than I realized. Unless my view on statistics was completely effed up.

Yeah, this did come out wrong. I mean more along the lines of "wow, I'm surprised, I wasn't expecting that" not "OMG! UR ALL FREKES!!!!1111oneoneeleventyone!!!1". Once the surprise at the numbers wears off, I'll be back to my normal non-caring benevolence.

Incidentally, if you want to tell me anything revelatory, now would be a good time.

Here.

It'll disappear soon enough, so here's the text )

While I can't say I ever thought of Harriet the Spy in any sort of gay context (I was always more hung up on how incredibly privileged all the characters are, and how unsupervised she is), I'm not very surprised to hear this interpretation, and I think it's a viable one. I've read Fitzhugh's less known books, including Nobody's Family is Going to Change, and they're much more open with the challenging of gender roles. I believe the dad even uses "you're not gay" as a reason to keep his son from dancing, even though, for all he knows, his son could be gay (not that it especially matters before you're old enough to be interested in anybody, but.)

And I'm done.
