Okay, not facts, news, but that doesn't alliterate.
First, plans for the renovation of the St. George ferry terminal. St. George is the terminal on Staten Island. The one in Manhattan is called South Ferry. While I appreciate the decorative bricks, and everyone loves a good mosaic, I really wonder if they're going to 1. put in decent lighting, maybe a skylight (hey, I love sunlight) and 2. put in a decent heating/cooling system and 3. fix the bathrooms/water fountains and 4. ADD MORE BENCHES. All those pictures they have of the "new and improved" terminals, none of them include any place for people to sit. When you have to wait an hour for the boat at 2am, you want a bench. Preferably several more benches than are currently provided. Ooh, and a place to sit outdoors, that'd be great. And cheap.
Of course, they keep touting these as "exciting changes". I'm not sure what the exciting means... certainly not a mosaic. Maybe it means they're also putting in a playground with a ferris wheel. *shrugs*
And a reasoned complaint against the idiot who is against fixing the 1/9 station which, may I remind you, is a
deathtrap. Honestly, every day somebody doesn't fall off the platform in that station, I'm amazed. There isn't even enough room for the entire train!
“I would urge Speaker Silver respectfully to understand the plight of the Staten Island Ferry commuter and those who use the 1 and 9 station, and beyond that, it also services all of Downtown Manhattan and New York,” said Fossella. “For the good of the order, I request that opposition be lifted. If not, we're going to stand steadfast and ensure that any federal funding going to the Second Avenue subway is blocked.”Good for him. Of course, "plight of Staten Island Ferry commuter" makes us sound like we're hunted unfairly for sport and profit and then mocked soundly... well, okay, nevermind.
