Barnes & Noble said Tuesday that the company was hacked after devices used for swiping credit and debit cards in 63 of its stores across nine states have been “tampered with.”

The hacking incident occurred in nine states: California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Purchases online at Barnes&Noble.com as well as the Nook were not affected.

There's a list of stores known to be affected. If you've visited a B&N lately and paid with a card, check for unauthorized transactions when you get a chance.

For those of us in NYC, I guess this is another reason to support smaller bookstores. (Or anywhere, but she's right - Books of Wonder *is* a great store and *doesn't* deserve to close.)

Likewise for California. The closest bookstore that i know of AT ALL to me is B&N in San Luis Obispo, though there are some places that have semi-organized selections of used books. My tastes pretty much leave out supermarket selections, and i read too slowly to use the library much. I've been an e-geek, though - most of the books i have been reading are classics on my phone via the Kindle app. The rest of my books are older, borrowed, or from magazine subscriptions.
