Borders, as you know, is totally going out of business

This is unfortunate for them, but it's a reminder for the rest of us to support our local bookstores when possible. Borders isn't a great loss, but small bookshops, where they still exist, are real gems.

With that said, there's one very good thing about this closing, and that's Going Out of Business sales! Who can resist? (I wonder if I can snag some bookcases....)

Be careful about liquidation sales. Over on the Consumerist blog, there have been posts about the "savings" that aren't really compared to what you'd pay elsewhere, or compared to prices at the same store pre-liquidation. And people who paid for store fixtures, were told to come back at the end of the liquidation sale, and found no fixtures or contact information to get their money back.

I don't know about fixtures, but when the Borders at Broadway closed (the only one I went to regularly because it was close to the boat) the prices WERE cheaper. I picked up several books I'd been dithering over before.

I can resist, but that's because my closest Borders moved some years ago into the "upscale mall" with the horrible parking and lousy business model that I hate. We actually drove through to see if parking was lucky, but it wasn't and they can have their 30% off and stuff it.

Guess I should find one and use the $6 I have left on a Border's gift card. Unless they deducted a dollar a month like some other stores do. Then it'll be $0. That makes it easy.

Shops deduct a dollar a month on gift cards if you don't use them? Bloody hell, I'm glad they don't do that here. (Which reminds me, I have a £1 gift voucher that's at least five years old I really ought to use...)
