Doesn't surprise me a bit. I'm constantly hearing people who claim to be Christian citing things from the Bible that are not actually in the Bible. This used to astonish me, because.... WTF?? Hadn't they read it? My family was Lutheran, regular Bible-reading was expected - I didn't know then that many Christian sects discourage their adherents from reading it for themselves, because they don't want them forming their own opinions about what it means.

That was the Catholic church's entire problem with Luther in the first place.

I know; he kept reading it and going "Umm, that's not what it says here..."; they were very annoyed.

The Lutheran church is big on encouraging Bible reading, but it's not so pleased if it leads the reader to conclude that there's no compelling reason to believe any of it. I guess the Catholic Church could have warned them what would happen if they persisted in their reckless, heretical notions about thinking for oneself
