And just like when XKCD did it, the only answer is to use a different type of smiley, one that doesn't include parentheses at all.

Embrace the big grin, the tongue sticking out, the weird Japanese chipper smiley!

It'll save you from having to worry about this, anyway.

I just usually put them outside parentheses whenever possible to avoid this kind of aesthetic weirdness. =P

A friend of mine reverses her smilies and uses either (: or C: instead.

(I'm fond of C: personally. I think he's cute. C: )

And as evidenced, if my parenthetical statements end with a smiley, I just add an extra space before closing parentheses. It might not be grammatically correct (what about smilies is?), but it's less confusing!
