That's what the non-oil folks are saying, and I guess it's the majority view, but I find it really, really helps to make the texture just right, otherwise it's too thick and lumpy. I could put more lime juice in than I already do, but I find that overpowers the rest of it really fast.

You can try it. I don't think it sounds appetizing, but if it tastes fine to you, tell me, I'll try it myself.

Don't think it would taste bad (unless you overdid it), but not sure if it would make the texture come out right. I'll try to mention it in my LJ if I try that approach...

I think the missing component in your understanding here is that most people put in sour cream - in fact, we used to, pre-dairy-allergy.

I don't think they do.

Tons of people piled on to say that they add chilies or jalapenos, but only one person said she adds sour cream.
