Here's an interesting article.
Jun. 2nd, 2007 11:05 amApparently, some 13% of men who don't volunteer for mentoring organizations with young (?) children don't volunteer, at least in part, because of fears of being branded pedophiles.
I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were actually a little higher, and if it carried over to other countries as well.

Date: 2007-06-02 04:20 pm (UTC)And let me tell you, I volunteer at Fin's school but when Dan shows up (like for the party, or when we went with them on the class trip or whatever) they FLOCK tom him.
"IT'S FINBAR'S DAD!"
Especially since so few have dads in their lives.
I'm glad that Fin has one mentor, and one for engineering, too. His mentor (both of them work with other kids) is a former scout leader, and he talked the engineer into mentoring as well. I'm glad they do, the school is age k-5.
But it is a very real fear. They sat us in the back of the bus, all the teachers were up front, and the kids were OBSESSED with the bathroom and when one kid was acting up, Dan turned to him, and although it was physically impossible to see from where Dan was sitting, this little punk (a class troublemaker, I know, I'm there all the time) started screaming "FINBARS DAD WAS LOOKING IN THE BATHROOM AND SAW JANES PRIVATES!" Seriously. Dan just said "no I didn't" and that was the end of it, and the school didn't even say anything but seriously, what the hell? Kids know it is a weapon and they are NOT AFRAID TO USE IT.

Date: 2007-06-02 05:08 pm (UTC)Yes, that could be awkward. One can only hope that, if you were thrown into this job, you'd at least show some self control ;)
(Otherwise, all I can say is, I'm glad you know your limitations.)

Date: 2007-06-02 05:09 pm (UTC)One of these days, some little brat is going to *actually* have something serious to report, and nobody will listen to him/her because they'll all know he's a brat.

Date: 2007-06-02 05:20 pm (UTC)Oh and the school system here does background checks before you ever set foot in the school, and interviews you if minor things come up but I am sure some things are an automatic bar. And if you are to drive on a class trip, you need to, every time, show current license and proof of insurance, on top of the background check. His school is on pretty heavy lockdown too, a bit less than a decade ago someone got in and raped a little girl. :(
New administration, new rules, new security. They even yell at you if you let someone 'tailgate' (let someone in after you've been buzzed in).
Kids really need strong male and female role models and it is a shame that not only is time (since many men work during the day, more SAHM than SAHD) a problem but so is concerns about sex abuse/accusations of it.

Date: 2007-06-09 04:45 pm (UTC)And at fourteen, we won't exactly get into what *I* was doing. :/
Its just in some places, 14 is a lot older than other places. Say, the difference between New York City (current times) and Middle-of-nowhere, Oklahoma (current times).

Date: 2007-06-09 04:52 pm (UTC)When we have things at church, or at our house involving people from our church, obviously their kids (and ours when home) are involved. For thanksgiving (my first in my own place cooking, OMG!!!) we invited over everyone from church who didn't have family elsewhere. That meant we had 2 little girls, and 3 boys, all 10 and under (one 10 year old, 1 four year old, 2 three year olds, and 1 two year old). Oh, and I'd like to point out I cooked an ENTIRE thanksgiving meal. Turkey, and ALL the home fixings, even gramma's stuffing, and baked mac and cheese!
Chris gets kinda uncomfortable when the kids (mostly the little girls) are climbing all over him, because he is scared of when he's wrestling with all the kids (the girls are tomboys in dresses, really) his hand may go somewhere wrong, and OMG BIG PROBLEM. It makes him worry a lot, and not want to go near them much. The bad thing is, he LOVES kids! He'd spend his day all day with them playing. But he's afraid of being branded a sicko.
And thankfully, no one worries because everyone knows chris would be chopping off parts of his anatomy before touching a child wrongly. :)
