Occasionally after an injury, blood collects and pools under the skin (hematoma), giving the skin a spongy, rubbery, lumpy feel. A regular bruise is more spread out and may not feel like a firm lump. A hematoma usually is not a cause for concern. It is not the same thing as a blood clot in a vein, and it does not cause blood clots.

Can anybody show me a picture of this? Google image search is *not* helpful.

Hey, that sounds like what my eyebrow did when I got whacked in the face with a broomstick a few weeks ago at work. I got hit right above my right eye and all of a sudden it just swelled up like crazy, and it felt a lot like that -- like a spongy lump. I just slapped a ice pack on it for a good fifteen minutes and the swelling went down. Not all the way down, though, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it was before that, and it didn't hurt unless I poked at it. ("Doctor, it hurts when I do this." "Then don't do that." Heh.)

A bruise is a (kind of) hematoma. What you need is to find the proper name for the type of hematoma that is lumpy like that.

Where did you get that definition?

Try spelling it hAematoma and see if any of those pictures are ok.

Contusion. That's another word for bruise, but not sure of the proper definition for that either.

I was having enough trouble trying to explain syndromes versus diseases today to Danny. I'm totally going to screw up on this whole 'education' aspect of nursing. I can't explain diddly squat to people.

This sounds an awful lot like a blood blister to me in appearance if not in cause.

Blood blisters are only tiny though, right? And under the skin? A hematoma can be anywhere, and can be huge.

I get bruises like that. Usually because I'm a bleedy kind of person(thin blood?). The bruises take their time colouring up, go very black and take ages to go away.

Under the man's right eye(on our left) is a pretty good example.

When I was a kid, my horse got a haematoma the size of my hand (I kid you not). I've gotten one on my arm, but only the size of my thumb. On soft tissue such as the stomach, not sure what it would look like, but on the arm it was a darkened area (from the blood collecting), a little soft and raised about 1/4" inch or so from the rest of the bruise.
