Bush visits "autistic basketball hero".

Sure, okay, I'm glad this kid is on the basketball team, and quite good at it. That's great. Really.

But...

1. He's not a hero. Nobody's had a life saved. Nobody's lives were risked. He didn't do anything heroic. He won a basketball game. Big flippin' deal.

2. Bush? He has (theoretically) got better things to do with his time. With the state of the world being what it is, I find this... I can't even comment.

3. And, of course, the impression this gives me is that for autistics to do something so utterly pointless is so wonderful that we might as well give up hope of ever seeing any autistic person do something just a bit more useful and worthwhile.

Plus, I'm just sick of hearing this story. Can we move onto something new now? Clearly, it's a slow news month, but surely you can find *something* to write about!

You know, if I ever achieved something deemed worthy of a visit from the leader of my country, I'd probably say "no thanks." I have very little time for politicians.

Well, this *is* Bush. I'd say yes just so I could yell at him.

*laughs her head off*

I don't even want to read the article, it sounds so cheesy.

Oh, I'd love to give the current leader of my country a piece of my mind, but I don't think a public recognition ceremony would be the best place for that. I'd probably be dragged off by his security.

your lawyer would ask for hazard pay.

being a lawyer, anywhere near the current executive, has not proven to be such a good thing, as i understand.

ah, but the money usually comes after the public announcement of hero status ... that's why people put up with the media whoring.

besides, being a lawyer, anywhere near your current executive, seems to be life threatening ...

I'm pretty sure that the term "sports hero" or "[insert sport here] hero" is commonly taken to mean, someone who is very good or exceptional at their sport of preference, and does not imply any actual heroism.

I'm not saying it's not stupid, though.

I find this completely ridiculous. If Bush had come to my high school and called me "a special person" for being a Deaf cheerleader, I'd have punched his lights out. Now that's worthy of making the news: President Knocked Out By Angry Deaf Cheerleader!

I'd buy a newspaper with headlines like that.

As noted by Molly Ivans, every time Dubya says something nice about a program or a program recipient, the program funds are immediately cut.

So watch for the announcement of a funding cut for autism programs sometime in the next week.

so being autistic means we're all heros now? i go out every day and do stuff i'm supposed to be bad at doing and therefore supposed to avoid/not do.

i suspect the parents are pr junkies ...

What gets me is, since he's this good a shot, why wasn't he a player in any game other than the last of the season, and then just to give him the ability to say that he played.

Sounds like some sort of prejudice against him because of his autism on the part of his coach, or so it would appear at first glance.

i try not to read articles of this sort. tend to make me want to hurt mundanes.

the general principle that you're a 'hero' coz you can do something other people think must be "hard for you to do"™ is raging prejudice.

"look at the clever monkey! it can throw balls!"
