Apparently, this school is putting on a holiday play. They used familiar tunes with new words, in a tradition as old as using "Greensleeves" to sing about the birth of Christ, if not older.

One of those tunes was Silent Night.

Oh dear.

They really should've realized that this would arouse the wrath of many who live nowhere near their district! Using those "smutty, really insulting" lyrics (see, now I wanna see them) instead of the song.

Mind, I have always personally been annoyed at those who re-use old tunes for new purposes in teaching kids. I don't *like* that there's people who don't realize that "This Old Man" is the real song, not "I Love You". But I don't think this is somehow smutty or indecent....

true indeed.

context is king.

here we have a school putting on a winter play. i suspect there would bne no hullabaloo from the insecure theocraity™ if the song used a different melody.

on the other hand, the melody is well known, and not a bad framework for helping the children to learn a new song.

i still cannot believe that anyone could seriously take this kind of thing to a court. if the school wereputting on a nativity play ... that would be a reasonable matter to raise, but the fact that they're not ... looks like we may have to have more wars to sort this shite out - again ...
