I am so glad you posted this! I am in the process of trying to clean out my house (mostly my garage), and I have lots of stuff I am loath to toss, but that I don't have the patience to sell in a garage sale. I found a group in South Pasadena, which is quite close to me, and I joined just now! :-)
I got the impression they were more concerned with the type of person who carries their dog around in a bag and takes it shopping with them and such. I was at Walmart the other day and some woman had her dog (not a service animal) in her shopping cart going with it. Yuck! I always double bag my food anyway before putting it in the cart, but still...gross.
