And I realized... some of the words repeat! Maybe, if I use my nifty translation, I can figure out what a few of the words are.

I can already see some potential problems with this idea:

1. This is a song, not prose... it's possible that they made up words to fit the rhythm, etc.
2. I have no way of verifying that the translation is correct.
3. I certainly don't know that the translation is line by line.
4. I *know* that the Hawaiian isn't quite correct... technically, Hawaiian has long and short vowels, which can make a distinction in the word... the text doesn't indicate that, and it's hard to tell from people singing if the vowels are supposed to be long or short.


However, I don't intend to start teaching the language (incidentally, Jenn, know anyone who can teach me? Please?) so this is just fun. I can do that. More news later, as I figure some stuffs out!

Hawaiian is one of the languages I muddle too much in (I RP a char that's from Lihue, on Kaua'i-- so you can imagine the "the island from Lilo and Stitch!?" questions I've gotten from a few...) and the translation looks pretty decent to me. You might want to look at the Mo'o and Lolo website if that's not the one you used. It's word by word but it's a good webbie.

Well, the thing is I want to work out what the words mean simply by comparing the translation to the original. Then I can check my work with a Hawaiian-English dictionary.
