But, moving on to the comments - so, it's okay to use a deliberately offensive word because you define it in a very specific way? Really? Could I get the memo about that, please? Thanks.

Now, to be clear, does that mean I can call people "niggers" if I know in my own head that I only mean people who are black and thugs/criminals/on welfare/druggies? And I can call people homos so long as I mean just those people who are exhibitionists and slutty? Oh, slut, that's a good word, can I self-define that as well? How many words can I do this with?

Of course, I could always just find better ways to insult people, ways that don't involve using words like nigger, homo, slut, and, oh yes, retard.

To retard is to slow. One can retard growth in cells, one can retard in music. Retard, the noun, is a slur (another musical term, but let's ignore that), and has no place in the vocabulary of... well, people who really fucking ought to know better.

i hate the word "retard." i don't even use it in its actual role either. i use impede. it has too much negative connotation. just like "nigger."

i wouldn't use that word if it = pretty flowers with sparkle clouds shooting out of them that turned into hundred dollar bills and unicorns, so i certainly won't use it in any way shape or form now (unless i am quoting someone else or in discussions like this.)

i agree with you, i do, i just need to bring up this question because i cant quite answer it to myself. if you shouldn't call people "retards" for being stupid because its offensive to mentally challeneged people (agreed), then what about calling people stupid? wouldnt that offend people who are born just...stupid? not mentally challenged maybe, but just stupid. maybe stupid is a genetic default.

im kinda rambling now, but do you see what i'm saying? What CAN you insult someone with?

Most people don't seem to associate stupid with actual disabilities, and until I get somebody who shows up and says they do, I'm not going to worry about it.

Generally, though, calling people stupid like that is definitely my last resort. I prefer to try just being smarter and more obnoxious than they are, implying they're stupid without actually coming out and saying so.
