It's very rude to post and then say "Don't comment if you don't agree with me". I agree, it's ruder to call people out on their rudeness, but... oh, look, I never claimed to be polite.

*is very irritated at the world right now*

*and the heat*

Edit: Just out of curiosity, and this is completely unrelated, I swear... does anybody know who the maintainer of [livejournal.com profile] hp_theories is? I'd like some sort of statement in there about the rules regarding non-theories.

I would much rather people comment or tell me they are upset with me, instead of acting like everything is peachy keen, then I read about myself and am getting slammed in some post they make. I much prefer direct communication. The communication might or might not go anywhere. For example, if someone doesn't like me talking about certain things in my journal, they can tell me, I will tell them I am going to continue and they might unfriend me. I'm not saying confronting me will make me stop, but at least I'll know I'm upsetting the person and have the option.
Sorry /end rant
Hit a nerve there on me, I think :)
Besides, I expect my friends to have occasional different views. They aren't my clones after all.

If you can't take comments, keep it to your own journal, I think.

In a personal journal I wouldn't mind someone saying that, but in a community? Too bad.

Could be worse, they could turn off comments completely which drives me up a wall.

Yeah, totally; if it's a community, sorry man, anything goes. But in your own journal I figure it's your sandbox, your rules.

you've always been polite enough around me, even with some of the half-informed rants i have gone on, or invokations of godwin's law, hahaha. even when you were jihadfully angry, you were still polite! i would say you are polite.

You know, that really annoys me too. I mean, if it's formed as a polite question (i.e. Would you mind not commenting if you don't agree with me, please?) it's mildly less annoying, but here's a concept: if people don't want comments, turn off the comments. And if you want comments but don't want to argue with people about it, just ignore the comments disagreeing with you. It's not so hard.

In a community, disallowing comments can often be rude - but you can set them to not be emailed to you. I pretty much agree with the others of - I wouldn't find it rude in someone's personal journal, but I would in a community journal.

Believe it or not, I'm kinda one of the moderators of [livejournal.com profile] hp_theories - I filled in for one of them while they were on holiday, and I'm still one now. I agree with the 'Don't comment if you don't agree with me' thing being stupid, and I'd be happy to put a statement in - I'd have to agree it with the other mods, but it should be fine.

I'll also make sure to comment on anyone who does post stuff like that in the comm. Thanks for pointing it out - if you see any more problems with the comm which we don't seem to have noticed, feel free to comment in my personal journal and tell me, and I'll do my best to sort it.

That's a very good question, um... well, technically questions promote discussion (or some of them do), so I think we'll leave that post in there, although I will update the userinfo of the community cos it's not very clear in there that the comm is theory only. However, if she or anyone else posts questions like 'Where can I get good HP merchandise?' that are definitely not theory- or discussion-related, I assure you the post will be deleted.

And don't worry about tattling - if you hadn't pointed either of the posts out, I wouldn't have noticed them! :)

I don't know how to put this, but this kind of thing also bothers me when people agreeing with a person post comments and those disagreeing decide not to do so so as not to confront the person, and the poster gets a skewed view of his readership's attitude.

An example might be posting a picture and getting ten "you look gorgeous!" responses because the seven people thinking "ho-hum, just about average" and the five thinking "good heavens, that girls is ugly... and has no fashion sense, either" decide to hold their peace.

Or someone posting a controversial topic and getting ten replies of "oh, you're so right!" but where eight others who disagree decide not to post because they think the argument will be pointless if the poster is that convinced of his stand on the topic.

In both cases, the "don't comment if you don't agree with me" -- which may be voluntarily adhered to by commenters even if not explicitly requested -- bothers me a little.
